The Sun Heats These Hot Tubs

Solar systems for hot-tub heating, like those for heating domestic water, require relatively small collector areas and can be quite compact in design, which makes them excellent retrofit options. Some are self-contained, as in the one below. Others have the collectors located on the roof at a greater distance from the tub. In fact, with some extra collector area, a solar system can provide all the summer heat and much of the winter heat necessary for both a hot tub and the household water, as in the system at right. The combination can be quite economical.

Eco-Friendly Green Lifestyle

In mild climates, hot tubs are often located out in the garden and designed with handsome decks for outdoor entertaining. In these cases, a cover for the tub is important to conserve the solar heat while the tub is not in use.

In colder climates, solar-heated hot tubs are equally viable, but they must be located indoors for year-round use.

Eight panels on roof heat hot tub and household water. Homeowners added solar system and hot tub when they had roof rebuilt. Heated water from collectors goes first through underground pipes across garden to hot tub, then cycles to household water storage tank in basement. To heat tub water without danger of scalding, solar-heated water circulates through copper heat- exchanger tubes running around perimeter of hot tub’s interior. Solar system heats tub to 103°F. on clear January days, much higher in summer months. Backup is gas heater.

In a tiny city garden, this compact solar hot tub was custom-designed and owner-built. Tub heats up to 110°F. on a sunny day (and loses about 10° overnight). Shed supports one large 5 x 10-foot collector panel (finned copper absorber plate with one layer of fiberglass covering) angled to face sun. Shed also contains pump, thermostat, sauna, and solar-heated shower. Climate is mild, but during occasional freezes, pump circulates hot-tub water through panel.
