The greenest holidays are those spent at home — enjoying the countryside around you without travelling long distances and adding to environmental damage. But sometimes you need to go farther afield. So make your break as green as possible.
Sorting out types of green trove!
The travel industry is responding to increasing demand for green or responsible holidays and has come up with a variety of options:
A sustainable holiday doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment.
An ethical holiday goes a bit further — it’s sustainable but also about treating the local people fairly and equitably and making sure that the money you spend goes to the local economy.
Much of the income generated by tourism in the developing world never reaches the local people.
Ecotourism is sustainable and ethical but in a natural environment away from hotels and resorts.
Local economies can benefit hugely from some types of tourism, and tourism provides some communities with their main source of income. But tourism that isn’t managed sustainably and ethically can be very damaging, bringing pollution, cultural exploitation, environmental damage, and overdependence on tourism as a source of income.
Ask your tour operator if they have an ethical policy. Are they committed to reducing waste and water use, and to minimising damage to wildlife and marine environments? Do they use local staff and, wherever possible, locally sourced produce? Do they pay fair wages to their local staff? The greenest holidays are sustainable, ethical, and ecofriendly. If you want to be truly green make sure that your holiday is as kind as possible to the environment and benefits the local community and economy at your destination.
Reducing the impact of your holiday
Holiday locally or choose the greenest travel option – take the train instead of the plane or car if possible. If you have to fly offset your carbon emissions (see the earlier section on ‘Flying carbon neutral’).
Stay in small hotels, bed and breakfast places, or self-catering accommodation – anywhere that’s not part of a big chain. That way the money is likely to go to local people. If you take an all-inclusive holiday through a UK company little of what you spend is likely to stay in the local economy.
Check out the accommodation ahead of your trip to find the greenest possible – more places are using renewable energy, have wind turbines, and encourage you to reuse your towels instead of having them changed every day.
Eat in local restaurants which buy their food locally – fresh fish straight from the fishing boat and meat and vegetables from the local farmer so you cut out the air miles.
Get around using local public transport, walk, or hire bikes instead of polluting the atmosphere with a hire car.
Stick to the same green principles you use at home: Switch lights and appliances off at the wall when you’re not using them; dry clothes in the fresh air rather than sending them to the hotel laundry; take a solar-powered phone charger with you (they use energy from sunlight in a way similar to solar panels and can be plugged into your mobile phone to charge it up. You’ll find retailers if you type ’solar mobile phone charger’ into a search engine or ask at walking, mountaineering, or climbing shops); stick to the marked paths and trails to save wear and tear on the countryside; find local recycling facilities and take your litter away with you.
