A Variation on the Trickle-type Solar Heat Collector

The trickle-type collectors that form the main collector area of this house are unusual in their construction. Instead of a single corrugated absorber plate with water flowing openly over it, these collectors have two: one nested into the other, with a tiny space (1/32 inch) between them. The heat-transfer water flows through this space, in contact with both the upper and lower absorber plates throughout its passage from the pipes at the top to the outlet manifold which gathers it, heated, at the bottom of the collector array.

The system proves a neat solution to a problem facing most trickle-type collectors: it allows the water ample contact with the heat-collecting upper sheet (which is painted black and covered with double glazing) but prevents the condensation that robs open-face trickle-type collectors of heat through evaporation and contact of the condensed water with the glazing. This variation of the trickle-type functions much like a closed, tube-type collector, but it involves a less demanding technology and is considerably less expensive.

Eco-Friendly Green Lifestyle

A small pump cycles the water from collectors to storage tank and back (the collectors drain completely at sundown to prevent freezing). The tank is of poured concrete, waterproofed, well insulated, and buried in earth beneath the house; its top supports the floor of one bedroom. Any heat lost from the tank serves to warm the bedroom above. The rest of the house is warmed by storage water thermosiphoned (with an occasional assist from a pump) up through the radiant floor slab (concrete with plastic pipes embedded in it).

Solar heat collection occurs three ways in partially buried mountain home. Trickle-type collectors cover most of roof surface, facing south at 60° angle for winter sun. (In summer, canvas awning is tied tightly over collectors to mask them from sun.) Above collectors are three skylights, equipped inside with Skylid insulation and outside with reflectors, mounted on roof peak to bounce 25% more direct sun in skylights in winter, increase indirect light in summer. South windows allow passive direct heat gain in winter; overhang shades them in summer.

Inside, house is open and airy; up‑stairs is a loft. Heat circulates freely from radiant floor heating system. Wood stove gives all necessary backup heat; its flue runs a long way up through room before venting outside, allowing heat to disperse to room air. South direct-gain windows are insulated with Beadwall at night.
